We love Volkswagens. Volkswagen started out as cool little cars
in the 1970's Volkswagen started producing water cooled, front wheel drive vehicles. They called them, "Rabbits" and much like the animal they soon seemed to be everywhere. The first diesel engine in a truck that I ever owned was a Volkswagen Rabbit Pickup. Volkswagen Diesels became famous for getting over 50 mpg and mine was no exception.
Somewhere in the early 1990's Volkswagen started using turbochargers in a lot of their smaller engines. Volkswagen still produced their diesel engines but also produced a TDI version which stands for Turbo Direct Injection. Though direct injection is popular now, Volkswagen and Audi were the first car companies to mass produce Turbo Direct Injection vehicles. This change made them perform like larger engines while still getting the efficiency that a small engine should. Many new models started using these turbocharged engines in ordinary daily drivers like the Jetta, Passat, and the new beetle. (We used to have to install our own turbochargers in the old beetle). The addition of turbochargers made the cars much more fun to drive and own but sometimes made them harder for technicians who weren't familiar with them to repair especially when it comes to emissions repairs. (I don't know why more technicians don't go to school for what they do).
